Devil's Staircase Hike - Ohiya to Kalupahana

The track through the Devils Staircase is approximately 14 Km. The different levels and the spectacular view of the green mountains of Sri Lanka has made this a hikers paradise. This is one of the most popular jeep tracks in the hills of Sri Lanka. Generally, trail can be started from Ohiya railway station or Kalupahana (Near to the Babarakandha) This trail goes over old dilapidated estate roads through many estates. The two most popular points on the route is the “V cut”, a channel cut through the hill to allow the road to pass through. Passing this, the road go across a stream which create the tallest fall in the country, The Bambarakanda Falls.

In order to reach the destination we took the night mail train from the Fort and reached Ohiya by dawn. It was freezing. We started the hike from Ohiya around 6 a.m. and headed to Horton Plains by the well tarred road .Occasionally we came across vehicles heading towards Horton Plains and turn off to Udeveriya estate on the left. This was the start of the stairway to Devil’s Staircase. Once the water stream is sited , following the stream will lead to the top of Babarakanda falls.Alternative is to use the road and It will lead to the Bottom of the Babarakanda Waterfall.Since the ohiya area was dried out past few months the waterfall did not seems to be at its usual state due to lack of water during the visited day. While admiring the nature I have a humble request to be forwarded.

Do visit these places but make sure you leave the place the way it was when you entered in the first place . Don't leave anything but footprints.
